Nestled in the mountains of Colorado lies Snowmass Village, a quaint destination ideal for those looking for a fun getaway. Snowmass is one of our favorite places to take our family, both for the activities to keep the kids entertained—but also for the memories we’ve created there. If you’re looking for an ideal winter trip, then look no further! From the slopeside lodging, easy airport access, and—arguably the best reason—uncrowded slopes, Snowmass is an ideal getaway for families. Here are some of our favorite stops to make within the village!
We came to Snowmass as beginner skiers. In fact, it was the very first time my husband and kids had set their feet into skis. They had absolutely no idea what they were doing. We booked a full-day private ski lesson so we could all be together while learning. That decision made our first day of family skiing a blast! We had so much fun learning and laughing together over our tumbles—like when my 6’6” husband got his skis tangled with our ski instructor’s, Katie.
Katie started us off with the basics in the learning area until we were comfortable. As our confidence grew, we ventured onto more challenging terrain. The best part of skiing at Snowmass is how uncrowded the slopes are, which is great for us newbies. I’m talking about only two skiers per acre, which gave us plenty of room for learning. By the end of the day, we were skiing blue trails and attempting small moguls. We were incredibly proud of our kids for being so fearless and were impressed that our ski lesson had taken us from beginner to intermediate skiers in one day!
And after a fun day on the slopes, we had to grab ourselves a sweet treat. Luckily, Snowmass offers free s’mores after 3:30 p.m. for everyone! How could we say no to that?
There’s so much fun to be had on the slopes of Snowmass besides skiing. After the exertion of our lessons, we gave our tired muscles a break and switched over to snow tubing. We were all screaming like giddy children as we sped down the mountain on our tubes. For an extra thrill, we made sure to ask for the spin at the top of the snow tubing lane, which caused us to spin around and around the whole way down the trail.
Fresh snowflakes fell as we were tubing, making the experience even more magical. Mark this one as a must-do for your family’s trip to Snowmass—both kids and adults will have a blast.
Just steps away from the snow tubing hill at Snowmass is another cannot-miss activity for families—the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster. It’s perfectly named, as both the snow-capped forest views and the thrill of speeding down the track at 28 mph took our breath away.
Adrenaline pumped through our bodies as we let off the brakes and went as fast as our carts could possibly go! We’re not sure who had more fun—the kids or us parents. We were all screaming with excitement every time we rode the coaster. Parents can ride with their kids, so it’s also a great chance to snuggle up next to your child and bond over this thrilling adventure.
Every great ski village has a thriving après ski scene, where families can gather around the fire and sip hot cocoa or hot toddies. What sets Snowmass apart is that the village offers not only an extremely cozy après ski ambiance, but there’s also complimentary ice skating and skate rentals.
We skated with the kids until we were tuckered out and then watched them skate while enjoying our cocktails around the fire pit. We really can’t think of a better way to après ski.
One last reason families should visit Snowmass is for family fun at The Collective in the Selfie Den and Game Lounge. We played Skee-Ball and foosball, rolled around in wacky chairs, and played giant checkers as a family. If you check it out from 2-4 p.m., it’s free and just $10 per person outside that time frame. The Selfie Den was a huge hit and allowed us to capture some beautiful photos to remember our fabulous trip to Snowmass.
Snowmass is the perfect family ski trip destination—whether complete beginners or expert skiers—with terrain for all levels and endless opportunities for family fun, both on and off the mountain. The charming village and stunning scenery among the Rockies made our first ski trip one we will never forget. There’s nothing that quite beats lodging slopeside and hitting the uncrowded slopes. Is it time to plan your next family trip? Make it a memorable adventure in Snowmass Village.
